Modelling martian dust devils using in-situ wind, pressure, and UV radiation measurements by Mars Science Laboratory

چکیده
NASA's Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity (MSL) has measured simultaneous fluctuations in wind and atmospheric pressure caused by passing convective vortices, i.e. dustless dust devils. We study the dynamics of these vortices fitting a mathematical vortex model to measurements MSL. The matches data adequately well 29 out 33 studied pass events having sufficient quality. Clockwise counterclockwise rotating directions are equally common among vortices. seem prefer certain trajectories, e.g. avoiding steep slopes. However, our results show that due sensitivity constraints method, central drops Martian devils can usually not be accurately determined theoretical single station. also present methodology extension for further constraining trajectories strengths laden (i.e. devils), based on concurrent in-situ solar irradiance measurements. apply this only evidently set its lifting capacity is probably stress lifting.

Dust devils as observed by Mars Pathfinder
[1] Dust devils are localized meteorological phenomena frequently observed in terrestrial dry lands and desert landscapes as well as on Mars. They are low-pressure, warm core vortices that form at the bottom of convective plumes and loft dust from the surface. They move with the speed of the ambient wind and are tilted by wind shears. The Mars Pathfinder detected dust devils as dust plumes in t...
متن کاملRetrieving Dust Properties by Radiative Transfer Modelling of Dust Devils on Earth and Mars
To date, characterisation of dust devils by interpreting spectral measurements taken during a transit over a spectroscopic instrument has yet to be done and would provide valuable information of the physical size, dust load and internal structure of transiting dust devils. A Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer model (MCRT) was developed to investigate the spectral variations during a dust devil tran...
متن کاملMeasurements of energetic particle radiation in transit to Mars on the Mars Science Laboratory.
The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft, containing the Curiosity rover, was launched to Mars on 26 November 2011, and for most of the 253-day, 560-million-kilometer cruise to Mars, the Radiation Assessment Detector made detailed measurements of the energetic particle radiation environment inside the spacecraft. These data provide insights into the radiation hazards that would be associated with...
متن کاملMars Global Surveyor Measurements of the Martian Solar Wind Interaction
The solar wind at Mars interacts with the extended atmosphere and small-scale crustal magnetic fields. This interaction shares elements with a variety of solar system bodies, and has direct bearing on studies of the long-term evolution of the Martian atmosphere, the structure of the upper atmosphere, and fundamental plasma processes. The magnetometer (MAG) and electron reflectometer (ER) on Mar...
متن کاملEmpirical Estimates of Martian Surface Pressure in Support of the Landing of Mars Science Laboratory
The aim of this work is to develop an empirical expression for diurnal mean martian surface pressure in support of the landing of Mars Science Laboratory. We evaluate the consistency of surface pressure measurements from four landers, Viking Lander 1, Viking Lander 2, Mars Pathfinder, and Phoenix, and one radio occultation experiment, Mars Global Surveyor. With the exception of Mars Pathfinder,...
